How I Discovered the Power of Marketing in Storytelling: Unlocking Brand Potential Through Ads
With one suitcase in my hand and a heart full of aspirations, I began my American dream, arriving in Seattle from the Philippines in 2008. That suitcase was more than just a container for my belongings; it was a metaphor for the journey I was about to embark on—one filled with aspirations, yet shadowed by a subtle, yet persistent unease whenever I spoke in meetings or pitched to clients. My career began in retail, which was a stepping stone into the corporate world at JP Morgan Chase and Robert Half Agency. Each position offered unique insights into business operations and consumer interactions, gradually guiding me to what I would discover as my true calling: marketing.
My interest in marketing took off with my involvement in the family jewelry business.
In 2011, when I ventured into jewelry manufacturing, I vividly remember the day I filed for our business license and, a month later, welcomed our first client. That day was more than just the start of our jewelry manufacturing venture; it marked the beginning of my understanding of the combined power of storytelling and targeted advertising in marketing. The following year, I launched Bashford Jewelry, where I wasn't just selling rings but marketing symbols of love and commitment, telling stories that resonated with customers on an emotional level.
Despite my successes, the nervous flutter in my stomach before every presentation and the second-guessing after each business decision hinted at a deeper uncertainty.
Even with my businesses, I struggled with the feeling that I wasn’t cut out for selling and a deep-seated fear of public speaking and reluctance to put myself out there, dreading each meeting and haunted by the fear of being questioned or challenged. The sale of our manufacturing firm was a turning point. I transitioned to a marketing role at a marketing agency, focusing on bridging the gap between brands and the Gen Z audience.
I embarked on a transformative journey by first taking a public speaking program by Heather Morrison, of Deliver Your Best, and then enrolling in Anna Vatuone's Personal Brand Accelerator. These experiences were pivotal in reshaping my approach to public speaking and personal branding. In Heather Morrison's program, I first discovered the crucial need for a thought switch in public speaking. Often, we mistakenly believe that our public speaking ability defines who we are. But this is a misconception. Our thoughts, bodies, voices, and words in public speaking may make it feel intensely personal, yet it's essential to understand that this ability doesn't define our identity. It's a skill, a part of us that can change and improve. This insight was a major turning point.
Realizing I needed to confront internal challenges to grow further
One of the most impactful exercises in the public speaking program involved a group of ten women, all very successful and inspiring. Heather asked us to voice the negative self-talk we usually directed at ourselves but to another person in the group. This exercise starkly highlighted the severity of our internal criticism. The difficulty of saying these harsh words to someone else made us realize how unjust and harsh we were towards ourselves. It taught me the importance of practicing more compassionate and realistic self-talk.
The Personal Brand Accelerator by Anna Vatuone was a transformative and empowering experience.
Marketing myself had been a challenge, despite my background in promoting brands and institutions. This program taught me crucial skills, such as crafting my personal brand story, and equipped me with strategies for authentic engagement on social media. The PBA program complemented my journey in public speaking, empowering me to pursue opportunities with newfound confidence and a deeper understanding of my personal and professional identity.
In my current role as Marketing Manager at an advertising company, I utilize my business experience and marketing expertise, focusing on paid advertising.
I manage significant advertising budgets for various clients, contributing to substantial revenue growth. This role has been about more than product promotion; it's involved understanding consumer behavior and honing my skills as a marketer and communicator.
This journey taught me the importance of believing in my abilities and that I am enough. It’s an ongoing journey, but with each step, I feel more empowered.
Throughout this journey, a consistent theme has been the invaluable impact of the right people offering their support and guidance at critical moments. From mentors in the corporate world to instructors in my public speaking and personal branding program, their insights and encouragement were pivotal in helping me conquer my fears and refine my skills.
Now, armed with a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of marketing dynamics, I am ready to pay it forward.
My expertise in ad creation and marketing isn't just a professional skill set; it's a tool I use to empower others.
